Either make friends with the people above or call the property owner. No other choices really, and it is an unfortunate fact of living in apartments/condos.

it depends on what kind of noises whether or not you can reasonably do anything. I've had neighbors below me ask me to not wear shoes when I was home, which I thought was a pretty ridiculous thing to ask of your neighbors. I told them I'd do what I could, and then went on living a normal life in which I wore shoes inside my home whenever I felt like.

There's little you can without major construction.

You may think so until you have to deal with it yourself. I know someone who had a neighbor ask them to not wear shoes while at home and they ignored the request. So he started blaring his stereo to just below the local noise ordinance to avoid legal trouble. In the end, the neighbors tried everything and ultimately moved. It seems to me that it would have been easier to simply not wear shoes at home.

the guy you know is a douchebag. whether I have to deal with it or not has nothing to do with anything; it has to do with being a reasonable neighbor and not asking somebody to change their 100% conventional routine of wearing shoes all day long (unless you live in the south, apparently). Intentionally blaring a stereo to just below the legal level is hardly the equivalent of wearing shoes inside your home.

No doubt, but he still got what he wanted. Funny thing is that the new folks haven't bothered him at all.

Back to the OP, one thing you could try is seeing if the structure is up to code. You usually need a professional to take measurements, but it's possible your own would hold up in court. Assuming of course the structure doesn't meet code and you have a case against the landlord. In all honesty, the best thing you can do is move.

I'm guessing he just didn't have the right motivation for you. :D

That's why if you live in a multi-story apartment, you NEVER live on the lower floors.

if I had a neighbor with a loud stereo, who was intentionally playing it loud to bother me, the phrase "two can play at this game" would come to mind. mutually assured destruction also comes to mind. and really heavy boots.

somebody should make a terrible movie out of this idea.

Depends on the noise. I've had above me neighbors insist on running the sweeper after 11 PM, kids jumping off beds, etc. Not much you can do about that except get ear plugs or move.

If it is lower level noise like slightly too loud conversations you can try and find a white noise machine. I've seen those very well executed in offices but never seen them in a home.

You can also try talking with the folks. But you risk them writing you off and then going deliberately out of their way to annoy you. If you want to go to the landlord the same thing could ultimately happen when he/she says "Hey, the folks below you are complaining ..."

I personally would move well before going to court over anything. It would be much cheaper and less timing consuming.

Good luck. This is why I bought a house. I couldn't take it anymore.

I'm thinking something like bag pipes or really annoying CD's like a recording of a lawnmower and people scratching chalkboards set on repeat :) (It's the Internet ... there's gotta be a cd like that SOMEWHERE!)

Of course this would be done whilst you are away sleeping comfortably in a hotel

lol, your LUCKY you don't live above me. if you have 25# concrete boots, you would not hear them above the noise i could make.
but at the same time, its a balancing act. give some, take some. just don't be rude about it.
