No Video Out From Receiver

Ok, I thought I was pretty good at this stuff and think there is something that I am missing with regard to the receiver setup. I have a SONY STR-DE995. I cannot get video out from the receiver to my TV. I have looked at some of the setup links here and other places and as far I can tell I am connecting things correctly.

Example: I'm hooking up my DVD as follows - RCA out of DVD to "DVD In" on receiver. RCA from Monitor Out to Video 1 of SONY TV. I select DVD mode on receiver and hear the DVD playing but there is no picture. I set my TV to Video 1 but I see nothing.

Please help...

I didn't go look up your receiver's manual but here are a few pointers that might get you going.

Have you tested the video connection direct from the DVD to the TV? Sometimes we blame one piece of equipment when testing shows it to be another. If you get no picture direct from your DVD it might be in the DVD setup. Get out the manual and check the troubleshooting guide.

If you get a picture in the above then it might be the receiver. It sounds like it is hooked up properly but it might need to be assigned through the receivers setup menu. Are you using component video or composite?

Hope this helps. Like I said I didn't actually look at your receivers manual.

Yes, I did run direct to the TV. All components work and cabling is good.

I'm using composite right now. Plan on using S-video (need one more cable). I'll have to look at the receiver to see how to assign as you say. Just not sure how to go about.

Here is a link to the manual:

I'm waiting on SONY to get back to me. Also, got a friend going to look at the manual. This is really bugging me...

If it works connected directly to the TV, just leave it that way... Unless your TV doesn't have enough inptus, there's no compelling reason to have video pass through the receiver.

If you have a progressive scan DVD player, you want to use the Component video output to get the best picture (assuming an HD ready TV). Composite and s-video do not support progressive scan.

Yeah, I could leave it but I like it so that audio and video switch together. I know it not a big deal to switch separately and I also like components to do what they are designed to do.

Well, considering that it does't do what it was designed to do....

Have you tried agoraquest where the Sony people hang out? Someone who has your receiver or a similar one may be able to help you.

It's always nice when they work as claimed.

I took a quick look at the manual. It looks like your video inputs aren't assignable so that can't be it. Do you happen to have any other video connections made? Do you have S-video from the amp to the TV for example? There might be a conflict with something else. From how you describe your hookup and from what I see in the manual it should work (not very helpful, eh).

Good news is that according to the manual it will do component switching so you can go that route. Although no OSD or upconversion (unless I'm mistaken).

Do you get OSD with what you have now?

j_garcia, I'll check it out - thanks for that.

JKL1960, I thought component swiching is what I was trying to do. I'm waiting on a friend for a second S-Video cable and I will try S-Video in and out. Not giving up yet.

I've gone through the manual again and found out that inputs are assignable and I have DVD on DVD. I think my last resort is running S-Video in and out.

1. Test every cable in the system directly to the TV. This includes the cable from the DVD player to the receiver as well as the cable from the receiver to the TV. Test both of them, make sure BOTH of them work.

2. If both cables work, you are feeding composite video using the monitor output composite video feed. Try connecting the DVD player to a different input to see if it is the DVD input that is bad. Make 100% sure you are connecting the YELLOW composite video cable from the DVD player to the INPUT of the receiver.

3. Make sure there is not a switch on the back of the DVD player that says 'PROGRESSIVE SCAN ON' and that it is not turned on.

4. Your TV doesn't have component video inputs (red/green/blue rca type connections)?

5. Return receiver, get a non-Sony product. It is pretty well established that Sony receivers are sub-par. :(
