No subtitles

I have a strange issue going on with my TV and blu-ray player. When i try to play the english subtitles on my TV screen they don't show. I played the same DVD on my computer and the subtitles were shown. I'm sure the answer is right in front of my nose.

The subtitles are generated in the source, not the TV. You should be looking at your DVD player, not your TV, for the source of your problem.

There's almost certainly a subtitles button on your oppo's remote.

Edit: There is, it's right below rewind and is labeled "subtitle"
