no sound need help

Hi I am having trouble with sound. I have hooked a yamaha rx-v361 to cable box axd pioneer 4280hd. I have a componet cable,digital optical cable,av cables, ran from cable box to receiver. Then a video cable from reciever to tv. Is this wrong.

Do you have HDMI? connector. If so you them. Cable box to receiver to TV. If not then use analog cabling. Make sure you assign the inputs correctly on the receiver. You can use optical cables from the receiver for audio or analog ones.

Like TLS said be sure you assign/select whichever optical input you are connected to as your digital input. It seems like a case where you haven't told the receiver where to look for the audio signal.
