Hooked up turntable to phono plug on 1969 Toshiba 5550M stereo radio. Very little sound on speakers. Phono plug runs an ipod just fine with lots of sound. Turntable works on another receiver. Any suggestions?

What kind of phono input is it? If it is designed for a ceramic cartridge, it would be designed for a higher level signal than it would be getting from a magnetic cartridge. Since it is an old radio, it could be either one (I do not know for your specific model which it is; if you have a manual, you can look in it for the information, or it might be printed on the radio next to the input whether it is for a ceramic or magnetic cartridge).

Thank you, it is a line level. I appreciate your help!

If it is really a line level input, then you need a phono preamp between the TT and the input. Phono output is lower than line level.

Does anybody know a decent phono preamp? What about the tube ones for around 100 bucks? Any better than solid state ? I don't know if customer has ceramic or magnetic cartridge.
Just bulding a system and trying to use an old HK 5.1 amp AVR 883? or 583 that seems to be pretty solid. Want to build a stereo system for the phonograph. Has some borrowed old Bose bookshelfs and the HK.

There a number of phono preamps available for under $100 and most likely, all of them get the job done. I certainly have not tried them all :). I doubt if a vacuum tube makes any difference in such a simple device.

I know from personal experience that an Audio Technica AT-PEQ3 is very good.
