Hi, I have a older onkyo stereo receiver that has been in use for quite some time in my family. Its a onkyo tx-37 and has always worked as it should but now when i turn it on there is no sound. I havent misused it or never even went over half volume. Does anyone have a idea of what could be wrong. Could it be just a burnt out part or is it totally junk. Thanks

Have you checked the obvious? It is unusual to have both channels fail at once if the unit powers up. Are you sure the tape monitor loop has not been engaged? That is a common reason for no sound. Make sure it is not switched on. Make sure the speakers are connected.

Does the tuner section tune?

If it is not some operator error, then it is impossible to say without having the unit under test what the problem is.

The speaker connection is fine and i really dont know what you mean by the tape monitor loop  Both a and b channels do not work. Ive just been using the tuner as i have been and there just isnt any sound. No settings are out of the ordinary. Everything is what ive had it on for quite some time. I turned it off after it working as normal, came back a couple hours later and schockingly there was no sound.

I have found out that unit has two tape monitor loops. I bet at least one has become engaged. I can't find a picture of one that I can read to tell you which buttons they are on the front panel. A tape loop is designed for off tape monitoring while recording from one of the other inputs. A lot of open reel machines were three head, and a few expensive cassette machines. When engaged you could listen to the recoding just after it was recorded, as the play back head was just to the right of the record head. If you engage a tape monitor button when there is no recorder connected and actively running in the loop, then you have no sound.

Look for the buttons that say Tape MON in/out and make sure one is not pressed in. Chances are high that is your problem. Just one engaged will give you NO sound.

It is possible the label is different from what I suggested, and so you will have to use some common sense. Do you have the manual? If so read it, and it will explain about tape monitoring, and where the buttons are.

If all else fails, then take a picture of the front panel that allows us to read the labels on the front panel, and we will tell you where the button are.

I found a picture and description of the one identical to mine. Please not that the tape 1 and 2 buttons used for dubbing are not pressed. For image of front go to google images and type in onkyo tx 37 and click on the first picture.

I like how the image is of the receiver sitting outside on the concrete. Sweet.

This is not meant to sound patronizing - is there a mute button, and has it been engaged?

Just so that we understand correctly, does the unit power up and look normal on the display, just no sound? If the display is up, look it over carefully and see if anything stands out to you as being different - like a mute indicator or a tape loop indicator. It's possible that something is engaged without the buttons looking like it is.

BTW, nice receiver. I have an Onkyo from back in the mid 80's. Haven't used it in years, but I still like how it looks.

I saw that picture last night, but I can't read the logos. Please connect a set of headphones and see if you hear anything from them.

If everything is alight and looks normal and there is no sound from either channel, this is unusual.
