no sound coming out of speakers

Hi all
I just received a used onkyo receiver today from ebay. I immediately hooked it up with my mp3 player through a Y cable and speaker wires. I have a pair of polk speakers. But when i tried out each plug on the receiver like tape and cd, i couldn't get any sound from it. My mp3 player is perfectly normal doesn't seem to be defective. But somehow the receiver is not responding to my music. Could it be that my speakers are damaged considering that they had been in storage for about 6 months. And it might have been roughly handled by the delivery person. But i just can't get any sound of it? Could it also be the fault of the receiver? Was the person trying to sell me a defective product? Thanks you all for your answers in advance. I am about to freak out cause I paid 100$ for the receiver.

yes

I selected the speaker A option on the receiver and I have the wires hooked up to speaker A at the back of receiver. Do I need to do something else?

not with that. If the unit a main pre-outs, check to make sure that jumpers are installed. Have you tried the radio or another source?

thanks but

Thanks for the fast response. Is it necessary to have a jumper installed? I am going to test it with my laptop. And could it be that my speaker wires are wrongly attached to the plug? It has two different colors, I attached the brown one to the + terminal and silver one to - terminal.

Some units have to have the jumpers installed, whats the model number of the onkyo? Attached wrong will still give you sound but not in phase.

It is onkyo tx-sr500. Could it be it was defective before I got it?

You dont have preouts. Have you tried to play the test tones in the setup? And yes it could be DOA

tested it still doesn't work

I pressed the test button on the remote control; it says that the left and right are all 0 db. Only the center channel is 5 db. What does it mean?

that means that the center is boosted 5dbs. Did you play the test tones?

is it likely

Is it likely that my speakers are damaged and cannot produce sound? they were perfectly fine last year. I just got them out of storage this year. But I think the most likely cause is the receiver.

Ill ask again, did you play the test tones? And the chances of both speakers being bad are low. You can always use a 9v battery to check the drivers.

thank you

I turned the volume way up to 60, i heard some sound, but extremely tinny and no bass at all. Then 70, it got louder but almost ear-piercing but no bass and does not sound like it is my speakers' sound, which is supposed to be much fuller. So now that is a new problem?

problem solved

Finally! Sorry about the hassel that I caused to everyone. It turns out that for my particular onkyo receiver, I have to turn to volume up until past 50 for it to be audible. Then the tinny sound and lack of bass issue were revolved by me attaching the speaker wires to the lower ports on my polk speakers. It has two ports, the upper port does not produce much sound. Only the lower port does. Thank you for your answer.
