No sound coming out of my denon

So I purchased a PS3 and I have HDMI picture from my TV but no audio coming out of my Denon AVR-687 receiver. I purchased an optical digital cable and hooked it up to the PS3 & the receiver but still no sound. Help me out someone. What am I doing wrong. FYI: this receiver has NO HDMI connectors on the back. it only has OPT1 or OPT2

Welcome to the forum!

Have you assigned the digital input that you connected to on the back of the Denon to the source selection that you are using? For example, assigning OPT1 to "DVD". If you haven't, check out page 41 of the owner's manual.

Also, have you set up the PS3 to output audio through the optical output?

If you have, just let us know.

Well I did change the denon settings to reflect the opt1 cable. I put it on DVD. However, the sound is so faint through the speakers. How do you change the PS3 audio settings? Here's my hook-up: HDMI from TV to PS3. Digital optical cable from PS3 to Denon. Perfect picture but not so perfect sound. When I switch the surround sound back to TV, the receiver produces the sound (as if I'm watching regular TV with surround. I'm so frustrated because I know its a simple solution but I just don't get it. Please help me..

I'm sorry to say that I don't know the PS3 menu settings, but I know that other people here do. Hopefully someone will see this tonight, but you might need to wait until tomorrow when more people are around. Be sure to bump the thread tomorrow by posting again if you haven't gotten an answer yet.

Select (Settings) > (Sound Settings) > Audio Output Settings. I don’t believe the PS3 allows simultaneous output over HDMI/Optical.
