No Rear Audio on Onkyo/PS3?

I have a PS3 connected to my Onkyo 604 via HDMI. I'm using HDMI to run audio/video to the tv (Samsung 4696). My problem is that when I'm watching a concert DVD I get no sound in my rear speakers (front 2/center work fine). When a dvd/blu-ray is playing, my receiver only gives me two choices as far as sound settings...PCM multi or direct. No PLX, DD, 5 channel, etc. I made sure all 5.1 options were checked under the PS3 audio settings.

I'm not sure if this is an issue with my receiver or my PS3. Do I need to run something else besides HDMI from the receiver to the tv? I know I can't see the Onkyo menu because I'm using HDMI only.

I am very unfamiliar with the setup of a PS3. But...

I highly doubt that the 604 can apply matrixing to m-ch pcm. The 605 can't. I think the 606 finally does.

What that means is anything that is 5.1 can only be heard in 5.1. To get 6.1/7.1, the audio track has to be that natively.

Hopefully for you, I am wrong about this.

That is correct. The 605 cannot do PLIIx for 7.1 matrixing through MPCM over HDMI. You had to get a 705 or above to be able to do that with last year's Onkyos.

well i had this problem with my hk and ps3. so i just got an optical cable and it all worked out. I have no clue about decoders, but when you are thrown a certain decoder from the source(Ps3) your receiver will upgrade to the highest possible decoder setting but wont downgrade unless you demand it to. My suggestion get an optical cuz the hdmi audio is only a specialty if you have DTSHD master audio or Dolby TrueHD. plus the normal dts decoders are great.

Problem solved. I made what appears to be a common mistake when hooking Onkyo receivers. I had the two rears hooked up to the surround back terminals instead of the surround terminals.

Found this list over on the avs forums.

Topics Covered in "TOP 10 ONKYO RECEIVER SETUP MISTAKES"

1) Setting HDMI Audio Out=ON
2) Expecting to see the TrueHD indicator light up with input from a PS3, HD-A1, HD-A2, HD-A3 etc.
3) Expecting to get sound in Zone 2/3 for sources that are connected only with HDMI or SPDIF cables
4) Sloppy speaker cabling
5) Using the Surr Back speaker terminals instead of the Surr terminals in a 5.1 system
6) Plugging your subwoofer into the multichannel subwoofer input instead of the subwoofer preout
7) Improperly setting the volume knob on your subwoofer before running Audyssey
8) Not checking Audyssey's results after doing a calibration
9) Not setting Listening Modes for 2 channel sources
10) Neither running Audyssey nor manually configuring your speakers

Thanks for the replies.

You're welcome. Ah, you meant the side surrounds. Well, Im glad it worked out! :D

yeah, I've seen that list at the 705 FAQ thread at AVS. That has got to be the most comprehensive FAQ for any product I have ever seen. Just nuts! Great Audyssey instructions as well.

no or low voices

I recently upgraded to the onkyo 606. At first everything was working fine. But I went into the audio settings of the PS3 and removed some of hte 7.1 options as I don't have a 7.1 setup. But now when watching DVD/Blu-ray from the PS3 the voices are really low while music and background noise is just fine. Any help would be appreciated. Im using HDMI from PS3 to Onkyo.

Same issue

I have a Panasonic home theater and have had the same problem, set it up so the HDMI was direct to my TV and an optical from the PS3 to the home theater for sound. Worked perfect when I set it up now all of a sudden I just get the front 3 speakers and no rear speakers..Any help on this issue will be great.

You mean that you only get sound from your three front channels?
How long had you been using the 604?

When you watch a DVD, do you select the Dolby Digital Surround track or the DTS Surround soundtrack from the DVD disc menu? And are you connecting the digital Optical output from your PS3 to your 604?
And are you selecting the right audio output from your PS3?
And you know that your PS3 has several audio adjustments for it's HDMI output and Optical output?

The HDMI digital output of your PS3 should be set to "PCM".
And the Optical digital output of your PS3 should be set to "Bitstream".

If you set the audio of your 604 to "Auto", it should decode DD and DTS soundtracks in all their 5.1 or 7.1-channel surround glory. It should also read Dolby Digital or DTS on your front display with clear indication of the channels operating.

And from HDMI, for blu-ray soundtracks, you should have "Multichannel PCM" showing in your front display of your 604, with all channels playing.

Am I missing something here?

Hi Cwire and welcome to the club,

I just realised that you resurrected an older thread. ;)

Which Panasonic receiver are you using? No HDMI inputs?
Did you read my post just above, it might also apply to your situation?
Check it out, and let me know how it goes.
If you still have a problem, describe well with all the components you are using and their type of connections between them.

I'm sure we'll be able to help you out. ;)

Bob

Note: I also just realised that the original OP has found the solution to his problem!
So, from post #5, Cwire you might also find a solution? But my guess is that you already read it.

You just mentioned the solution to your problem; just revisit the audio setup menu of your PS3, and reselect your previous audio selections, as it was working just fine prior to your audio selection changes. ;)
