I heard a rumor that they are not making any more 80g PS3 models. Is this right? I checked several online as well as B&M retailer's and no one has this model in stock. I haven't heard any announcements from Sony on this. Does anyone have any information on this?

That seems to be the way it's going. A lot of rumors and Best Buy "insider" information floating around. So no more backwards compatibility? I wonder if there will be a replacement in the works.

Edit: Apparently they are releasing the 80GB MGS4 w/ DS3 controller bundle in June so maybe that's why.

I find it hard to believe there wont be a replacement. I mean, think of all the customers that had PS2's. Backward comptibility is important to those users. Also, no SACD playback on the 40g model. :(

I heard there will be two new PS3 versions this year, each with over a 100 GB HDD. Other features are unknown to me.

I'll be honest, I don't recall.

The rumor I heard was they were coming out with a new version of the PS3 to replace the 80g version. Not really clear what the new version would be.

FTR, there are a lot of PS2 games that don't play or play poorly and/or buggy on the PS3. I gave up trying to use it for most my games. They would lock up or have graphics so bad it was difficult to see what I was doing. I'm hoping a future update will fix this, but I aint holding my breath.

Soundman, whereas I don't recall the specifical details of what I heard, I do recall exactly where I heard it. It was from the guy at my local Game Stop about a month or two ago. You could try poking around the PS3 forums on Sonys site.

From what I've read, most of the hub-bub about the new PS3' (120gb or 160gb) came from a quip made by Sony to a British interviewer saying that there were no plans for a 120gb PS3 for the UK but that a 160gb would not be out of the question. From what I can tell, this is the only official word of any kind from Sony. After scouring for hours and hours this is the only quip, blurb, or direct quote from an official Sony representative. This doesn't mean that this is all that is out there, it's just all I could find. Hope this helps a bit.

Jack,

What games are you playing... my ps2 games look GREAT. My psone games look a little blocky but still look pretty good.

Did you change the PS2/PSone scaler... I think you can make it none, standard, high.

I have not had a PS2 or PSone game freeze yet. I have completed Twisted Metal Black (maybe like 20 total hours ---several days), all the GTA's work, Burnout, Hot Shots Tennis and Golf, and Devil May Cry 4... along with PSone games such as: hot shots golf, Twisted metal 1-4, family fued, rogue trip, jet moto 1-2, and all the namco games play wonderfully. No freeze at all.

I have the original 60GB and the only time the machine froze was during Saw III Blu ray playback and returned it and replaced that blu ray and it kept freezing... not sure if they ever fixed it... but that is all that has ever frozen.

Let me know more please.

Thanks for the good info. It does sound like something will be released, even if the specifics aren't clear. That is encouraging. :)

I was having problems with all but the first SOCOM, Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon 2, MotoGP, & I forget what the others were. When I searched Sony's site they had known incapatability issues. I don't recall if any fully froze, but they wouldn't load screens or you would suddenly fall from the sky or it would lag beyond belief or the graphics were so bad It was hard to see much. I got mad and stopped playing them. I'm using the 80g. The guy at gamestop said the 60g worked best with non ps3 games. I haven't checked back in a while to see if there were any fixes for my games.

The main things they have talked about in the new PS3s are improved bluetooth antenna's and larger drives.

The system with the larger drives (120GB or larger) will be released when Sony announces their TV/Movie downloading service and PS Home in the 3rd quarter of the year.

But for now the only PS3 80GB system you can get new is the Metal Gear bundle or Metal Gear limited edition system in June.

Keep in mind you can put your own larger hard drive in the PS3 anyway, its customer replaceable and sony has instructions on how to do it.

Wow, why would they need this? I can control my basement PS3 from the upstairs if I wanted to.

As for bigger hard drives, I agree that one can just do that themselves.
