You could connect your player to the TV with HDMI, and connect the audio to your receiver. If you have only one HDMI input on your TV you could get an HDMI switcher to switch your different video sources.

i swear i have the worst luck in the world. i buy my receiver just before hdmi starts rolling on everything. for the tv. i have one of those refridgerator size big screen, that i bought for way to much, when flat screens were still
8-10gs and wit my luck, i dont have the hdmi on the tv. i paid enough money that i told myself, i wont buy a flat screen untill my tv crumples to the ground. but now their so cheap, i mite have to cave.

Well, you are up the creek until you get a TV with HDMI. To make it handy you will eventually need to change your receiver. I would get one with HDMI 1.3 that also decodes Dolby True HD, since you have a Blue Ray player.

Seems you are back at go. Sorry!

You may not be totally screwed. If I’m not mistaken, I just started researching BD players’ capabilities, it may depend on which BD player you purchased. I’m assuming your older TV at least has component connections. Some players can down-scale and output a 720p signal through its component outputs.

They should not be able to. Current regs require that the signal at all analog outputs from HD devices be downgraded to 480i.

TLS, I think you're right, I forgot about that. The manuals don't make that obviously clear. Instead they put it in an obfuscate footnote.:(

At least some BD players can output 720p to your TV via component video.

Pretty sure the rig will work with component to the tv, and coax, or optical, to the receiver. Just follow the set-up menu in the player so it will know where/how to output what.;)

If component will not work, there is s-video. I would work hard on getting component to work first.

Your system will work, and get the highest PQ your tv will accept, no matter what.

The only down-side is that you will have to select the audio in the receiver, and the video in the tv, every time you change sources.

That is a new HD device, so if he uses component he will get 480i. That will be no better than his DVD player.
