No desktop sound from PC speakers. Only headphone.

Hi all, I'm a newbie here. I have not been able to get Desktop sound from my surround system speakers; just my headphones.

Here is my setup: I have a LG monitor connected to a Display Port of a GeForce 1080ti GPU. From the GPU, I have a HDMI cable connected to the HDMI 1 input on a Yamaha RX-V6A receiver. From the HDMI Output of the Yamaha Receiver, there is a HDMI cable connected to the input of my LG monitor. The HDMI OUT of the receiver is ARC, but the HDMI input on my LG monitor is not. So per the Yamaha manual, I disabled the ARC capability of the receiver's HDMI output port. As things stand now, only my headphones receive sound. Sound via my home network or a browser works fine from my speakers, but nothing from desktop. I spend a lot of time with flight simulation, and I need desktop sound! Any advice here? Thank you! Some receivers automatically disable the speaker amplifier if there is something plugged into the headphone jacks. Are you using the headphone jack on the receiver? Also, your description makes it sound like you have both HDMI and the DisplayPort video connectors plugged into the same monitor- are these actually plugged into separate monitors for a dual monitor system, or do you have both video connectors plugging into a single monitor?

Output being disable is entirely possible, and along those same lines, it can often just be that you have the select the playback to go via output you want. In many cases, you cannot have BOTH headphones and PC speakers working simultaneously, but should be able to choose. That can be application dependent as well, where you have to tell the Operating System AND the application how to output.

Thanks for your replies. I don't have my headphone plugged into my receiver, so I know that isn't the problem. Really the only problem I have is not being able to play sound from my PC games through my speakers. It only goes to my headphones. My sound card is a ROG Xonar Phoebus. Looks like the way to fix my problem is a SPIDF from the sound card to a Optical connection on my receiver. Pete

Is there a sound output setting within the games? While PCs/Macs can be set to output sound from various connected devices, so to can programs/apps in that same computer and the browser audio output can come from say any built in speakers or headphones while another program/app is using a cable or network connected device for audio output. Am I the only nut who plays music from a connected device while browser audio comes from built in speakers?

Go into the sound settings on your pc and ensure the receiver is the output for sound.

What's your operating system?

Might check your input assignments for connections, too, if the headphones aren't the issue.

I'm with Wardog. If you're using Flight Sims, then I assume that it's a Windows PC. Go into sound settings and check your output assignment. It's probably set to Realteak if your PC has a Realtek Audio chip set which is common on motherboards. That's the setting needed to use the speaker connections on the back or the headphone connection on the front. There should be a setting for NVidia audio or something similar that will use the audio on the graphics card to output over HDMI. As mentioned above, you can not output to headphones and HDMI at the same time. Either switch back and forth using the Windows audio settings, or get a 1/8" to 1/4" stereo adapter and use the headphone jack on the receiver when you don't want to use the speakers. You may need to have the receiver connected and powered on for Windows to recognize that HDMI audio is available.
