Niles SI-1200 problem

I tested a Niles SI-1200 at an auction site and the power light comes on and the "active" lite next to it and then fades out rather quickly. The fuse + - lights dont come on. I read on the manual there are 3 startup methods and was wondering if it is working fine, it just has no input connected to power it on properly. Do you think that means it actually works once it is inputed properly?

I power off then on and nothing, then if I wait a few minutes then they will come on for a few seconds then off again. Sometimes a little pop when I turn it on? What is the problem with this and is it a easy or complicated and cheaper or expense fix? I can probably get it for good price but repair cost makes a huge differece too. Help with your thoughts

Welcome to the forum!

I can't answer your question, but I'm bumping it in case someone else here can.

Hey bhomber,

The 3 start-up methods you are referring to are:

1) Music sense - The amp will come on when it gets an signal from a source.
2) Trigger - You have a 12v trigger from your pre-amp to the amp that turns in on when the pre-amp is on.
3) Manual - you turn it on via the front switch.

Which of these modes was the amp amp set on when you encountered the power lights cycling on and off?

According to the way the manual reads the power light should be red if the amp is plugging in and the master power swich is in the on position. This means even if you are using the trigger or music sense modes the power light should still be red when the master switch is in the on position. The Green active light should come on if the amps circuits have been turned on based on the start-up settings.

For what you describe the amp could be ok if the power light stayed on and the active light went out because the start-up method was set to trigger or sense.

Ok, I did read a little on those 3 startup options. Problem is that these only stayed on for a second then faded out. Power light never stayed on. So it seems something must be wrong with it? But why would it even start. It must get power, but then lose it some how. I suppose that is not a simple fix then, as in under $50? Auction is in 5 hours from now. Thanks.

If they faded out I would be worried and would not buy it. I don't live near any repair facilities so I don't have experience with cost of repairs for that type of amp. If you get it for $50 and can get it repaired for under $100 then it may be worth it but not knowing what is wrong it could be more than you want to spend and you are out $50 bucks.

How many channels do you need? Are you using it for a whole house system? That Niles is only 25 wpc although you can bridge it I would only use this for background music like through your house.
