im thinking of purchasing the denon 2900 dvd player multyregion at £499. I currently have the Pio 717 which has been spinning nicely for 4 years..hence why i need to upgrade.

Ive read lots here about the various bugs the 2900 has but i like to think it would be an inprovement on the 717.

Im only using a 32" panasonic pl10 crt, ill upgrade later....

your thought!

Do you need additional features that your 717 doesn't have? Is the 717 not performing properly now? Age is not a stand alone reason to upgrade :)

I agree with mtrycrafts about replacing gear. I jumped of the replace gear every year groove. Some of my stuff is almost as old as me. Just joking. Nowadays I only replace something when I find something that has demonstrably better performance. Sometimes I wonder if new and different looking is better. NOT. Having new stuff is nice though. The only stuff that I have that could be classified as "new" is my SACD player and that is almost 2 years old. The power amps that drive my ES panels are older than a lot of the members of this discussion group.

If you are after the newer formats, DVD-A or SACD and your old player doesn't offere these, by all means, you need to upgrade. You should get a universal palyer in that case, that plays all or most of todays offerings.
