Let me start by letting everyone know i am building a new 7.1HT in a new home and have been slowly collecting everthing ie: reciver, speakers and so on. Like most people i am on a tight budget $2000 and need EVERYTHING, so far i have purchased polk monitor 40 l&r fronts, polk cs1 center,psw10 sub,4-polk r15's for surrounds and a jvc reciver and dvd player. My question is did i screw up? I have read this board on several occasions and have NEVER seen anything about polk. I have shoped at all of my local stores ie:cc,bestybuy, crutchfield and even bjorns wich is a high end (b&w,klipsch, boston,Mcintosh)local store in san antonio, tx. Anyway with all of this said i have never heard of the brands listed on this site, what gives? I am not an audiophile by any means but i like good-clean sound and my ears like the polk sound,Is this site out of my leauge or am i just not educated enough yet? BTW my ears also like b&w sound also, but my wife and wallet do not.

Welcome Itheis!

First off, If you like what you hear and it fits your budget you did good!

Polk speakers are good speakers. Their subs are a little sub par but not horrible by any means. Do a search. You probably find pluses and minusus for every speaker here. (for there is no perfect speaker):(

So many things go in to a a/v purchase. Budget, room size, music vs. movies/tv, what music, how loud, how much bass, looks, size...i could go on for awhile.

Stick around, you'll learn alot.

Most of the members here would do their systems different and do time and time again.(don't tell the wife)

Itheis, again, welcome. First off, no, you are not out of youre league and you did not screw up. Do you like the sound of your current set up? If that's the case, then you're set. My brother bought a pair of Monitor 40's and I remember telling him that I really liked what I heard. You probably haven't heard of a lot of the brands here because, well, simply put, there is a lot of brands. You're probably learning that there are a TON of brands out there. Don't regret your purchase at all. There are some loyal polk fans out there. They are, by no means, bad speakers. With that said, and echoing strongbad, you probably could have done better on the sub...but hey, everyone can probably do a little better on everything. :D That's the fun of this hobby...finding/seeking out those components that you really want and must have. If it sounds good to you now, kick back and relax.

Good luck with your new set up and by all means, read on. There's a lot to sift through here.

the brands you havent heard of here are internet brands ... thats why you dont see them in the stores you frequent. that being said, a part of showing off your system to your friends includes brand recognition. no matter how good an internet brand of speaker is, if your friend has never heard of it ... it doesnt matter. you see, these internet brands and the polk you've bought does not differ much ... especially in sound. (except for price)

on the other hand, i've actually read a lot about polks on this website, actually its the only store brand name that's regularly mentioned here. people here are addicted to the internet brands and for polk to be mentioned in a good light here is already a good sign that it's very good.

about your subwoofer, believe me, you can do a lot worse. that model of sub is pretty good for the price already. (obviously store brand prices cant match internet brand prices, but that's what you paid for: a GOOD BRAND)

enjoy your setup!

Polk makes a wide range of solutions for every pocket book and provide you with what you pay for. That can not be said of a lot of mfg's.

I think you did great with your budget.

The only thing I may have done different was forgo the extra 2 surround speakers and spent that money on the sub, as others here suggested. I think the trade off would have more than justified itself.

Happy Holidays!
