Newbie speaker setup question

Hello all; im a newbie with regard to home theater and speaker setup. I dont have much money to invest in a home theater system; but have 1000 dollars. I have ordered a 661 yamaha reciever that was used and at a cost of about 200 dollars. So now i have about 800 dollars left. In reading various posts it seems the subwoofer is critical and and am wanting a good subwoofer some like the rythmik fv-12; but that cost about 550 dollars leaving only 250 dollars for floor speakers...now this is the question; is it worth placing that much money in the subwoofer and is there an affordable pair of speakers to compliment the subwoofer that would make sense with this setup that is within my price range; or am i wasting to much money on the subwoofer where not enough money can be spent on floor speakers (or maybe bookshelf speakers if they deliver the sound).

I guess im thinking that if i have a good subwoofer then maybe i dont need to be as concerned with the floor speakers delivering enough bass; so could go with may be a smaller or cheaper pair as long as they deliver the mid to high range well?... not sure on this thinking

welcome dsharp to the most expensive hobby you'll ever have.

I would keep my eyes out on the used market. audiogon is a great place to buy from as well as ebay. accessories4less is good too.

you may want to consider bookshelf speakers.

and paradigm is one of the finest companies in your price range.:D

I would say go with the rythmik fv12, its on sale for 499 right now. If you read about the direct servo technology you will wonder why every subwoofer doesnt use it, i just ordered one this week. I also recommend ascend acoustics cbm-170se bookshelf speakers, for 300 dollars they simply can not be beat for the price. They have won many awards and a lot of studios use them because they are so accurate. I have the sierra 1s which are the best sounding speakers i have ever heard, best sounding meaning accurate and not harsh on the ears. I will share my thoughts on the fv-12 when i get it if interested.

thanks for the replies; lot of good information in this forum; and the more i read; the more i realize how much i dont know.

Im seriously considering buying equipment used. There is some risk to this as you are dealing with sellers and used equipment that might be difficult to return; but think it might be worth the risk. I have bought a reciever used for 200 dollars... its the yamaha 671 (my first post said it was the 661; but not correct; its the 671).

Ive been looking at used equipment on ebay and such; one problem i have is that i have no idea what equipment to be looking for and what is a good deal or not as there are so many available.

Im wondering if anybody could post what they think might be the top 5 speaker pair and what top 5 subwoofers i should be looking at that might be in price range used...200 dollars spent on reciever; so 800 dollars left on my 1000 dollar budget for speakers and subwoofer; my thinking is based on my reading that i may want to spend more on the subwoofer than the speakers; but not sure on this.

anyway; been fun learning about this

:D

NHT superzeros and super 8 sub

NHT is an internet direct company and you have a 30 day trial period. Pick up the NHT superzeros and the super 8 sub for $500. That's a nice system and comes in well below your budget: Super Stereo System | High End Speakers | Powered Subwoofer. Or you could pick up the superzero 5.1 system with the super 8 sub at $800.
