Newbie Questions and Problems

Hi everyone. New meat here. I recently connected my new system and have a couple of questions.

The first problem I have is a rolling horizontal shadow bar running down my screen with the MK AVR 340 set to tape (for my laptop) or DVD with the Plasma set to the laptop video in. No line when playing DVD's or the cable box. The only thing that has changed is the AVR. I had an Onkyo and JVC AVR on this setup and it didn't do this. My video cable to the laptop is about a foot away from the rest of the cables. Turn on the AVR...line, turn it off, no line. I called HK and the tech said it didn't make sense and that I should try one of those snap on line conditioners. Does anybody have experience with this issue?

My other question is about the 7.1. I don't plan on having 6 speakers in my living room so is it OK to just hook up the front, center, sub, and surrounds and use it as a 5.1?

It's been a while since I've diddled in a/v so any help would be appreciated. And thanks markw for turning me onto this place.

Don't I know you from somewhere?

Can't help about the black bars, but as for only using a 5.1 system on a receiver capable of 6 or 7 channels, it should be no problem.

It was simple with my Denon 2802, where I'm only using five of the six available channels and it was a menu option, but I doubt it'll be difficult with virtually any modern receiver.

It's just knowing where to set it where the confusion sets in. Check your manual (or surf the menus, if you're into masochism) and they should tell you how to accomplish this.

Welcome...

leave him alone, Jim

He's a good kid and he's not the first one that has had problems understanding what you say or, more to the point, separating the wheat from the chaff in your verbose, obtusely worded pearls of wisdom.

...and, he ain't from the city. To him, WE tawk funny. Can you believe that? ;)

So they allow him to remain on this forum as well? Must be mowing someones grass.

I'm actually from Seattle. Just moved down here for the weather. But now it's so hot all I can do is stay inside with my music and movies.

Let it go, BG

This is a different forum.

You guys got off on the wrong foot due to misunderstandings on BOTH sides. BOTH of you should let it go and move on.

So, can ANYBODY help this poor guy with his video problems?

Bueller... anyone?

Oh, BG, ...If you think it's hot now, just wait until August.

...on bothering the poor fella'...unfortunately when people insinuate themselves in situations, the full import of which they don't quite fully understand, I find it incumbent on myself to show them the error of their ways...particularly when shots are taken, veiled or otherwise.

Oh, miniature guitar you can come out and play now...

And that is odd, how does one bonsai a guitar? Trim-off the excess string material at the tuning machines or cut-back on the root notes of the chords?

jimHJJ(...hey mark...have a good one...)

Jim I don't even think you know what you're saying anymore.

Bonsai as used just before crashing headfirst into the enemy. That's my guitar technique. But I do grow Bonsai too.

Well, gotta go try to get rid of the feedback loop HK says I created. If I'm not back in hour send the cable dogs out.

...somebody else wanna' tell him...No on second thought let me...That would be:

BANZAI!!!

jimHJJ(...sorry for the volume level, it just works better...)

P.S. FYI BANZAI a Japanese battle cry [ 万歳 banzai]
BONSAI a potted shrub that has been dwarfed [ 盆栽 bonsai]

Quite a difference in the pictographs/characters...only in "Monty Python And The Holy Grail" were shrubberies used as a tool of battle...And they liked the laurel particularly...

Problem is fixed. All of them.
What was the cause and solution?

Sorry about your less than warm greeting here. I think the conflict scared some of the regulars away.

My Plasma has two component connects. The one I've been using has worked fine on my past receivers, but with the changes in technology I had to switch to the other side.

And of course none of this is in the manual. Harmon Kardon has the best service reps I've talked to in years. Straight to the problem with no hassles, and without making you feel 3 feet tall.

Let's experiment a bit.
1st exp.- Do you have cable TV/satellite connected to the system in any way? I bet you do. Unplug that feed totally either at the wall or satellite box and see if that shadow is still there. Do this before two.

2nd exp. Does that new AVR has 3 wire AC plug or two? If 3, and the above experiment didn't help, get a cheater plug for the AVR for a temporary experiment only and see if that solves your problem. I feel it is a ground loop issue and is manifesting itself as you see it.

Just so everyone reading this knows the real deal...[snip]
...by all means...anyone wishing to see for themselves can easily do so...in fact here's a link to the "newbie" thread in question:

http://forums.audioreview.com/showthread.php?t=18179

...and my response to bonsai/banzi-boy in the no-holds-barred Steel Cage OT-equivalent @AR:

http://forums.audioreview.com/showthread.php?p=148354

And do recall bonsai/banzai...I said not one word directly to you here @AH...I was speaking to markw...you chose to open yor trap re: me and make an issue of your prior insipid behavior at AR, then further compounded it by continuing with me, resplendent in your grade-school banter, at this site...

And BTW take note, I haven't posted at either site since the 23rd...while you, most certainly have...so I'd watch those "get a life" comments that were made in your poor attempt at an insulting PM to me...I take out the trash in the light of day...I followed you? You might wanna' do a date check or two...

jimHJJ(...got a problem? Take it to the Steam Vent...)
