I have a Yammie 1400 receiver which can accept 6 or 8 ohm speakers. Now I know that is conservative as it can probably push 4 ohm if I dont over do it from what Ive read on this board. My question is if I get an amp, will it override the receiver so that 4 ohm speakers wont be a problem or will the receiver still be a problem when say the L/R and center are connected to the amp?

What, exactly, do you plan to do with the amplifier? What speakers do you plan to run with the separate amp?

Well as Im new to alot of this audiophile jargon and setup of High end Eq, I hope to either use the amp for L/R Fronts and Center channels while using the Yammie for the rears. Im not sure I need to actually do this, because the yammie by itself might have enough guts to push the speakers. I wanted to use the yammie as a pre. The speakers I plan to get are either the BW-705's or comparable Paradigms-S4.

If you use an external amp to drive any or all of your speakers, then the internal amp of the Yammy will not be doing the driving on those channels. Therefore, the specifications of the external amp become the limiting factor... even if it is less capable than the Yammy.

The Yammy can certainly drive the S4s. I have a 2400 hooked to the Studio 60s and it does great.

The Monitor series is also a great deal... check them out too.

Well, I suppose I will just get the speakers and go from there. Probably dont need the amp at this point anyhow. The speakers alone will set me back some $$change$$ at this point.

FWIW I was also a little leary of running 4 ohm speakers with a 6-8 ohm rated reciever (Denon 3805). A Denon rep told me the 3805 was 3.2 ohm stable so I figured I'd give it a shot. No problems at all,....I pushed it hard for 6 -7 hours. At least I thought it was a good test anyway, averaged 96db measured from 18' away.
So I should think your Yamaha would do OK,.... I'd try it, and if you have some clipping or other problems then look at an external amp, if there are no problems then just enjoy it ;-)

Thanks for all the responses. Amazing how much can learned in just a short amount of time. I notice how some the salespeople act when they notice you have some idea of what your talking about, not that I do;) ALot of them shine you on.

Right now, Im trying to dial in my yammie 1400 with my 9 year old Infinity Sterling TS satellite speakers. I dont know, the sound is not full, has no soundstage presence at all. I cant even hear the L/R rears working. I dont have my sub hooked up though which probably attributes to me not having an low frequency or bass. It is a passive bass infinity sub. If had the sub and speakers for 9 years now. I just bought the Yammie, so im still troubleshooting.
