Bear with me. I have a set of Sony SS350H fronts, a Sony 5000 dedicated center channel, and 2 Sony SS150H speakers for the rear. I have a Pioneer
VSX 501 receiver. All picked up used but in good shape. I have a mid size room, 15 by 25.
Being I'm on a very limited budget, and guys, I mean limited, I do want to add a sub. I can't get into the big boys so I need advise.
I know nothing about subs and am relying on your help. I was looking at a Velodyne VX 10 or 11 at 199 shipped.
Any other direction I might look.
Thanks.

Welcome to the forum!

You bought your other stuff used. Have you looked into used subs, yet?

Sorry haven't audition either one of those, read the specs they look ok. IMO you might want to save a little more to get a better sub for that room or do what Adam suggested and look for a used sub which may be better either of the Velodynes

For a room that size I wouldn't go any smaller than a 12". I think you have a pretty good chance of being extremely underwhelmed with a 10" sub (although of course almost any sub is better than no sub). The BIC 12" might be worth looking into, I haven't heard it but for a cheap 12" I've been told they're competent. A used Hsu VTF-2 might be possible also if you can find one, but they're $466 new right now (on sale I think ) so 200 used probably isn't gonna happen, maybe $300. I've got a VTF-1 in my computer room that I've been very happy with.

There's an Outlaw LMF-1 on eBay right now but with shipping you're probably going to be close to 400, depending on the guys reserve. His buy it now is 375.

You could put a decent DIY (sort of) sub together with a total cost of $180. I've done it and the results are very good. Start with an enclosure - you'll need a driver - get the one Deep Surplus recommends - and an amp. How about a 110w $35 amp? Crazy? No - here it is. Make sure to follow all directions on that NHT page.

It looks great - sounds great - and best of all only cost me $179 shipped. I use it in my bedroom - its not the loudest sub you'll ever hear - but at less than $200 none of them will blast you out of your chair. It keeps up with any sub I've heard in that price range.

I owned the VX-10 and used it in a 15x20x8 room. The sub is musical but in that size of a room it struggled down low. Output below 26 Hz did not exist. I attached an old in-room measurement I made of the sub's frequency response for your reference. Bottom line, that sub in a 15x25 room will struggle but it may be better than no sub at all if that is what you are up against.

If that is your budget then I think DIY like Knucklehead90 suggests might be the best bang for buck.

For a newbie, I'd start out small, and inexpensive. My buddies got the Yamaha YST FSW150 Subwoofer. Its good for a starter, till you get a feel for the amount of power, you need. Good luck, and tell us what you end up with, and how you like it. :)

Check out the ASW-10 over at TSC. I owned it for a while and its a great sub for the price. It has nice clean sound with solid output to 28hz.
The ASW-10 is sold out. No information about when stock might return. I suspect they may be disontinued, along with the "sold out" ASW-8.

I have said once before and I'll say it again save some more money to buy a better sub IMO that's one place you don't do on the cheap.
