Hi All,
I am a complete newbie to high-end stereo equipment. I was given a beautiful system but I am looking to upgrade it. I am looking to spend between $1000-$2500. I want to know what the weak point in my system is and what I should replace to gain the most benefit to the sound produced. Here is what I have.

Preamp - Rotel RC-1550
Amp - Rotel RB-1552
CD Player - Rotel RCD-1072
Speakers - 2 x Bowers & Wilkins DM602 S3's

Any information that I could get about the relative quality of my components would be great, like I said, I know almost nothing and I am only looking to upgrade because I got all this stuff for free and I have some money that I would like to invest in getting the best sound possible.

Only thing I might upgrade there would be the speakers, and even those are pretty decent already. Sounds like a very nice setup indeed.

Dont replace anything! Add to what you have!!

Do you want to head into home theater surround sound?

If yes then go to audiogon.com & get a matching center channel. Then find a good sub from HSU, Rythmik, SVS or Outlaw. Depending on room size you need at least 1 good sub. A Rythmik FV-12 is a great $500 sub!! But i cant say for sure what you need because i dont know your room size & if its opened up to other areas. You need to calculate the whole space thats connected to figure out the right sub to get.

A center & sub will get you to a nice 3.1 system then save up to add surround speakers!!

Youve got some nice gear. A great place to start from!!

If going HT, I'd move those to surround duty and pick up a new front left, right & center.

If sticking with music, then you could easily pick up some really nice speakers to go with that amp on that budget. That amp should be able to handle speakers in that price range too.

The electronics are nice - however, go out and audition some speakers.
There are lots of good options, and some good stuff out there. If you
want deep bass - there are some good subs like Rythmik, HSU, Epik.

IMHO, there is no point making a $1000-1500 change if you will not appreciate it fully. Just enjoy the system for now and later add a subwoofer.

I was thinking the 602s3 was a tower speaker. Now that i see their a bookshelf then yes, once you get a center & sub then save up. But dont buy surrounds, move the 602s3 to surround duty & get some towers up front!

There are a few around here that dont care for B&W speakers. They may tell you to get rid of them, but if YOU like their sound then dont worry about them. Speakers are for the most part subjective. There are a lot of good speakers on the market. You have a nice pair so enjoy them!!!

What using it for?

What are you looking to use the audio gear for? So, just music, or how do you have the gear set up? Used with a TV to play sound from TV or movies?
