Newbie here! Introductions & questions

Hey everybody. Wanted to introduce myself. Name's Tim, from what little I've read on here already you seem like a cool group of people, and being that I'm starting down the path of investing in my first home theater setup, I thought I'd jump on the wagon. Here goes...

I'm on a serious budget (I know, sucks right?) and am hoping to pick up a receiver used for $100-$200 bucks. Suggestions?

Speakers - my dad is giving me a set of 3-way Onkyos with 12" woofers and wood cabinets from the 70s (he says). I've heard them, they sound great. Wondering what center channel and sub might blend well with these? To my recollection they have a very warm sound, so I'd hate to pair them with a harsh or overly crispy center channel. Since they have 12's and pretty good bass response, I'd hate to pair them with a highly "mushy" sub. Suggestions?

Welcome to the forum man!!! Hopefully we will be able to help you out on your new venture...

As for the receiver, you won't be able to get a AVR that can perform well for that much....the only route even close would be to look at finding a used unit, but you are still going to have to spend more than that...

As for the speakers, if you can give the model for them it might be possible to track down some info that will help in suggesting some models that might work well with them....Also what are your listening habits (as in how loud, music vs. home theater, gaming) and the size o your room. All of these factors will influence what might be right for your needs....Lastly what is your budget for the speakers...???

Tim welcome to the forum! You can actually buy a good new inexpensive reciver for $199. Can you find out the exact model number of the Onkyo speakers? Then we can try and search for the center channel that was designed for them.

We can talk about a sub later Dayton makes a nice inexpensive one. Then there are hsu and SVS subs.

Sorry, what is "AVR" ? Total price range right now is about $300 for used stuff. If that means I'm waiting on the sub, no big.

I'll get you the model for the Onkyos asap, but they're at my dad's place. May be a week or so. Pretty sure they are 3 ways with 12" woofers on the bottom.

I listen to Jazz, Classical, Rock, and Soundtrack type music and I like action movies. Probably watch 2-4 movies a week.

Somebody just posted that they got a Denon 688 for $200. That's a great deal for last year's model if you can find one.

To match that 70's sound, look to the Energy C-series IMHO. It's going to be tough to match those old speakers with new ones, so it's all subjective what's going to match. My impression of the C-series is that they have a good chance of coming close to the old 70's sound and they are affordable for those on a tight budget. Don't take my word for it though. See if you can find a C-series center at a place with a good return policy and try it out at home first.

Whats the consensus on the Klipsch RC-10? Found one locally for $100.

For the receiver, I would definately consider looking at the Onkyo's and Denon's at ecost.com. They are remanufactured and come with a 90 day warranty. Some great deals there.

I'm on a budget too - you can get great deals on ebay, I picked up a fairly decent NAD reciever for less then a 100, also someone turned me onto these, I hear great things about them, I'm getting mine on wednesday.

Hi Tim!
From another "audioholic" on a "serious budget" - be patient...
Look for used/refurb/closeout deals.
I've been on my quest for a long time.
I may never own my "dream system" because of budget. But I've always been able to squeeze the most out of a penny...and be pleased "for a time"
Once you start down this path - you'll always want more/bigger/better.
It's a never ending cycle. Just remember, to stay within your budget, if you make minor compromises (not the latest/greatest), you will find bliss!!
Every step I take is an upgrade and my budget slowly increases.
Don't "settle" - it's better to wait/grow the budget. But if you find something that will make you happy/ function for a while - go for it. The world of HT is ever changing . Once you jump, you're hooked!


EDIT: I meant to say, dont' worry about sub or even center for now. Just concentrate on an AVR to drive "what you have"
Next step L/C/R or sub...really depends on how "satisfied" (for now) you are w/ the speakers you get from your dad.
Be patient, build your system....
