Great site guys.
I just purchased my first system and would like help with connecting everything.
Samsung 46'lcd 1080p
yamaha rxv659 reciever
polk rm20 5pac speakers
polk psw10 sub
pioneer dv46av dvd
direct t.v. (waiting to upgrade to hd as we speak)
I am not sure which cable to use to get the best sound and video
also, the subwoofer does not have a lfe input, the sales rep said to run cable from lfe jack on reciever to either line in on sub. Is this correct?

thanks in advance.

IMO, run everything to the receiver
From the DVD player and Sat receiver, digital cable (either optical or coax) to the receiver. Make sure both are set to output digital sound data, as neither probably do without changing a setting

Run sufficiently large speaker cables, but don't buy monster or any other overly priced cables

Check with the mfg on the sub connection, some require it goes to one or the other.

Unless you end up with a particularly good DTV installer, verify the set up. Many are incompetent buffons who know nothing about high quality A/V.

As stated above. You don't need expensive cables at all. Monster is expensive. :)
Interconnects and speaker cables can be had on line from 'monoprice' Depending on speaker cable length, 14 ga should be plenty.

Use an interconnect to the sub from the LFE as the sales person stated. You may need a Y splitter at the sub end for proper operation.

Thanks for the replies.
So far this is what I have. ( I was waiting for dtv tech to install new dish, but he still has to come back.)

DVD: optical out to receiver
hdmi to lcd

SUBWOOFER: R/line in to subwoofer on receiver

DTV: Optical out for audio to optical in on receiver
Component out to lcd. ( dtv guy can not get hdmi to work unless set
480 res., also hd picture looks like crap).

RECEIVER: Component out to lcd ( mainly for menu setup on monitor ).

will this cover me for all my listening and viewing needs or do I also need to connect some multi channel stuff from the receiver. ( not even sure what it means.)

sorry for sounding like a rookie.
But I sure am getting an education hear!!!

Thanks for all the help. More questions are sure to follow

Thanks Phil,
I am still waiting for dtv tech to solve my hdmi problem.(still no picture when set to 1080i and hdmi connected to lcd.)
Any way do I need to connect any of the multi channel jacks to any components.
Manuals mention something about sacd. ( I am a little confused )

Thanks
