Hi guys!

Cool forum, been amusing myself for a bit and whetting my appetite for more stuff too!

Some quick info about me, well, my system

I am running 2x Technics SL1200GLD's into a Numark DMX06 Mixer and thence on to an old Marantz PM66SE amp via some QED interconnects. Quite a simple and basic system and sounds lovely. My speakers are Pure Audio SUB10/SAT4 - an AV speaker set up used only in stereo mode. What I mean is I am only using two sats and the sub. All have Audax drivers. The sub is an active model with a 250w output and is wired high level from my amp (no sub out) and the sat 4's are wired from the sub using the on-board x-over. Goes well enough for my needs! :)

My question, if I may ask one in this section, is because recently; I have had a continual humming from the sub. I should mention that all cables have ferrite chokes. The sub hums with no in-out connections, so a friend has stripped the psu and de-soldered the main 4 6800mf 80v Jun fu caps from the power rail. 3 of which are dried out and rattly.
The sub is constantly powered for quick response, I should add. It has blown the caps after maybe 12-13 months.

I have now the oportunity to replace all 4 caps and would ask if someone knew of any benefit in 'upgrading' them. I have found replacement jung fu caps cheap enough, and cornell dubiler, panasonic AND m-cap amongst others, and I'm now wondering what to fit in the place of the origs?

Is there any benefit to going up to 10000uf 100v, or stay with the cheapo jung 6800 80v ones?

I am not an expert or an electronics guru. That's my friends job, but he is an engineer (ex Nakamichi) so I don't want him to do all the research too (that's my job!) and he will fix it all up for me, whatever I go for. He's kinda from the "won't make a discernable difference in sound" camp, so thinks that buying overly expensive caps is perhaps a waste of money.

I see it as an opportunity to try to prevent the same thing happening again in another 12 months!

Any views REALLY appreciated guys! :D

Yeah, I doubt that using expensive caps will make any huge difference in sound quality. The good part is that they will last longer and survive higher temperatures. People can talk about discharge rate, but unless the cap is truly awful I probably wouldn't worry about that. If you can see spending more money on caps, go for it, but only for reliability's sake, of course.

That's my feeling. I could pay £30.00 per cap (m-cap) or, £3.50 (jun fu)

I have a feeling that mid ground cornell or panasonics would be the deal to go for. Not that I mind paying the money, but if it were a good pre-power amp combo or similar I could more easily justify the cost to myself. The sub was only £500 new anyhow, so £120 for 4 caps is maybe too much to spend. The law of diminishing returns, and all that jazz!

Thanks!
