Newb needs help with Bookshelf Speakers

I just purchased a Yamaha RS500 receiver that will play in the den and the garage (hung from the ceiling). I am looking for relatively inexpensive bookshelf speakers that are clear and crisp and will not fatigue my ears. The system will only be 2 channel and will not have a sub. I listen to 90s rock and some country. Looking to spend about $300 a pair. Can I have some recommendations on what I should be looking at? Thanks for the help.

Thanks for taking the time to help and the response. I had been looking at the speakers at Best Buy (Klipsch, Polk Audio) which both sounded pretty good until I switch to the towers (which I really cannot use due to their size and my wife not wanting them). The towers just sounded so much clearer at a lower volume. The store was using a Sony receiver. I have been looking at the NHTs on flea bay, but it was hard to tell how old they are or very expensive.

Oh yeah, a couple other options that are a bit cheaper than $300 for the pair but probably perform in the same league or close to it.

The Infinity Primus Line of B/S, can usually be found for $150 or less.

Getting ready to order the Wharfedale speakers. All the reviews that I could find were very good. I do have a question, one review stated that these are 6 ohm speakers and at a setting of 8 ohms you may not get full use of the drivers. The Yamaha RS500 has two settings 4 ohm and 8 ohm. Will this be a problem? Thanks for any help.

The resources to make that decision are already available.

Speakers have been ordered. Based on the highly technical article (thanks for the link) looks like I will be keeping the receiver at the 8 ohm setting. I will report back when the speakers come in. Thanks again for all the help.
