Hi all. I just got a Yamaha RX-V663. Now I'm having an issue I think, perhaps...
I don't have any speakers that anyone would consider quality by any means. I went to goodwill and got two Aiwa and two Rca speakers. Both are bookshelf sized, Aiwa are rated 6ohm max power to 100W, and the Rca's are 8ohm power to 100W.

I'm just biding time till I can afford to get a decent speaker package...

Here's the issue... With these four speakers plugged in I have the volume at -15db right now, and it's pretty quiet. My neighboor has a similar yamaha receiver with AR towers and at that volume level it's LOUD.

I have a few more days to return this receiver, but I don't have the ability to test it with a decent pair of speakers (neighbor on vacation). Does it sound like a problem?

Thanks,
Skymeat

your neighbor probably has more efficient (louder per watt) speakers :)

should be no problem - or you can bring your receiver to your neighbors - or your neighbor can bring over his speakers :)

Did you run the auto set-up routine? If not, I recommend that you do that. I think that your Yamaha will do a similar thing as my Pioneer in that it will reset the volume level at a reading of "0 dB" to some "reference" level. A reading of "-15 dB" would then be 15 dB below that reference. Yamaha has no way of knowing what speakers will be connected to their receivers when those receivers are shipped, so the auto set-up routine is able to take your speakers into account and set up "0 dB" to the appropriate level. The end result - your system may sound louder at "-15 dB" than it does now.

To follow up on Mike's initial comment, you can also let us know the model numbers of the Aiwa and RCA speakers, and we can try to find out the sensitivity ratings for them.

Night mode may be on. Read the manual. Follow set-up guides. Once the receiver is set-up correctly, then run YPAO.

So I think I have it figured out....Doing more reading.

But the sensitivity of the speakers....I have 2 Aiwa sx-nv70 and 2 rca 40-5022

I can't find any stats about the sensitivity of those speakers. Can anyone help?

These speakers are from fairly cheap mini-systems, so I dont think they would have that low of a sensitivity the amps made to drive them probably werent over 30 wpc. Just use the YAPO and it will probably bring the channel level up

Okay.... So today I plugged in my neighbors AR speakers. They are the 2 way towers circa 5 years ago. The receiver works just fine. The speakers I have now apparently are of such poor quality that the radar dosen't even bother to blip. New speakers coming soon. Next paycheck.

Update: Originally there were two 6ohm speakers in the front, and 8ohm speakers in the back. total of four speakers.

I disconnected the 6ohm speakers and traded them for the back speakers. Everything improved.

I think that the lower ohm speakers were taking power from the rest of the system?

In any event I'm sure the amp works fine now.

Also I had the back speakers hooked up with my htib speaker wire, it was 22-24awg (and the stripper was not cutting the sheath, just stretching it off ), and about 30' long. I think that helped when I traded for a thicker wire.

I ordered new speakers from TSC today. (6)pr6's and a center, subs next month. I'm anxious to hear the results.

thanks,

I am really interested in your thoughts on TSC's speakers. They look EXACTLY like Sapphire audio speakers which are discontinued....

Jamie,
I'm just getting the bookshelf speakers. It was my impression that the floor speakers were the sapphire lookalikes? Well I'll let the world know what I think of them in a couple days...:D

Thanks,
