For those that are interested, last night I received an order in from Blue Jeans for some new speaker wire (among other things).

Previously, I was using lamp cord terminated with inexpensive screw type banana plugs on my center and surrounds as well as a nicely finished set of wires from Heartland Cables which utilizes a Canare star quad wire on my mains.

Suffice it to say, my son likes to mess with wiring. A lot... As a paranoid audioholic, I wanted something he was less likely to be able to yank out. Further, I've found that on my center speaker, somehow the banana plug could randomly get aligned in such a way as to cause some audible artifacts which required reseating of the plugs to fix. Clearly, something needed to be done :D

Enter BJC's base 12 gauge speaker wire terminated with their considerably nicer banana plugs. The plugs have a locking feature which means little hands are far less likely to pull them out. I spent about twenty minutes bothering with one set just to test it out and found that yes...they work quite well. The only wires I didn't bother to replace were the Heartlands since well...the techflex looks so nice and those nanners, while not locking, aren't necessarily as easy to yank out either :D

So what about the sound??? Well let me tell you what, I don't know what the folks at Blue Jeans Cable are up to, but this was quite an upgrade. Bass seems markedly tighter over the 14AWG lamp cord I was using, and my speakers seem considerably less bright (is that why its called lamp cord???). Most important, while my speakers had a somewhat recessed midrange, now it's HELLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOO here's the mids in all of their buttery smooth goodness!!!

Anyway, if you couldn't tell, that last paragraph was total load of crap, but I do appreciate the locking plugs. I wait with bated breath to see if they're proof against the efforts of a determined one year old.

Seriously, I have no life.

Well, since it locks into the component, now you have to worry about those components being pulled off the shelves or perhaps speakers falling on the tots.

I think I'm safe in that department; all the speakers that are vulnerable to having their wires pulled are fairly stable floorstanders, and the receiver is in a locked cabinet. Of course, he could rip out a binding post or something, but that just means new toys for me :D
