Audiophyte
First post and I want to applaud all who manage and contribute to this site...
Definitely the best I have found in my many hours searching the vast ‘E’byss of so-called audiophile forums on the Internet.

Ten years ago I purchased my second and current mid-range system; a Soundcrastman pre-amp tuner, a Rotel RB980BX amp, and Signet 280 two way speakers.

I had intended to add a quality turntable, but alas, the Age of the Digit has persisted, and I have become one the many with a collection of miniature vinyl sandwiching metallic substrate rater than the larger grooved with black color discs. Secondly, I find myself spending as much time watching digital movies as I do listening to music. When I purchased my first DVD player (a mid-level JVC) two years ago, I selected one with 5.1 RCA outputs and now run the two rear surround channels through and old Onkyo Stereo receiver powering some Boston Acoustic book shelfs. A bit of a hassle balancing the volume and all the turn-on sequencing, but it does actually work.

I can just imagine the look on most of your faces right now, but as you will soon learn, my picture likely appears in many dictionaries under the definition for ‘Frugal’.

My question is this: I am currently bidding on a Rotel RSP-980 surround sound processor on eBay and am looking for a used 3, 4 or 5 channel Rotel amp to power a 5.1 system ( I believe that is what I’m try to end up with – L,C,R with L & R rear and a sub later on) .

My rational is that music quality is much more important to me than Home Theater performance, and while the local shop offered me a Denon 2803 for $500, I felt building by individual component for roughly the same amount would yield a better system that would not sacrifice ‘musicality’. My pre-amp tuner has been hit with a voltage spike during an electrical storm does not function properly, so I need it replaced or repaired, and I didn’t feel I was going to get the ‘Stereo’ performance from the pre-amp section of the Denon unit that I want. So, finding a used separate turner is part of the plan.

Any and all comments and advise will be appreciated and taken with respect, along with all your jokes and jabs taken at my ‘Frugal’ nature.
