So, I've been looking for a pair of "reference monitors" for my growing bookshelf/ stand mount collection and had pretty much made my mind up on the Selah SSR's. that was until I noticed the UA 721's in black curved cabinet on PE. There is a special price on them (299.00 vs 484.00 reg.).
The cabinets are 170.00 each and the the drivers run another 325.00..not to mention crossovers and other hardware.
now, the bonus is that the SSR's use the same cabinet, so I can sell the drivers etc. and buy a couple of blank baffles and be money ahead if I'm not thrilled with the ushers.
Any thoughts on why the ushers in black curved cabinets were being given away? The other finishes were reg. price and the kits sans cabinets are 325.00!
cheers, Mac

At $299 each that is a big price drop from $484 each. I've never heard these speakers so I can't comment on them. The Usher tweeter and the Dayton RS28 tweeter are said to be essentially the same, but I've never heard those Usher woofers. Of course, the relative balance between the woofers and tweeter and smoothness across the crossover range are the result of the crossover designer.

Note that they are not in stock now.

I have heard the Dayton RS722 kit and liked it. It's crossover was designed by someone different.

You might find selling the drivers and crossover boards alone won't be so easy. You might have to get cabinets and assemble everything.

I haven't heard them either but a buddy of mine has and he said they were very nice. I bought my GRs based on him letting me hear his, so his taste and mine are similar, meaning my guess based on his comments says Ushers will be a good speaker.
