new tv to old receiver

I just purchased a new tv, Vizio 32", and im trying to connect it to my older receiver, a Sony sound system. The receiver has the optical output, and so does my tv. Is this the only connection i need for the sound to play through the speaker system? the problem im having right now is getting the sound from my TV to play through the receiver speakers. please help!!

Assuming that you meant that the receiver has an optical input, then you should have all the connections that you need. You might need to assign the optical input on the receiver (so that it knows which source, such as "TV", is using that input). What is the model number of your receiver?

Make certain that the optical out on the TV is switched "on". On some TVs, when that connection hasn't been used they are switched "off". They have to be switched on manually. That switch is usually burried deep in the manu somewhere.
