Hi all,

I'm going to be helping my mother shop for a new TV in the near future. Her budget is around $700-800 (the total budget is $1000, but that includes a new stand too). I'd like 720p, though it's not a requirement. It doesn't need HDMI, but again, it would be nice for future proofing. I'm looking for the best TV for the money. I'm willing to look at online retailers, so let that be a part of the consideration.

Thanks!

Well, if there's one person on this planet we need to take care of, it's Mom.

if you don't mind a tube TV, this one is a very practical choice well within her budget. it has an HD tuner built in and still has an HDMI port available:

or a similar-sized flat screen (no HD tuner and only DVI in)

here's a 34 inch, but no HD tuner for right at $ 800. I always had good luck with Toshiba tubes in the past.

all of these are pretty hot sellers, so the links may no be good for too long.

hope this helps.

Lol Jax, you're usually so thorough with your posts, I'm kind of disappointed.

Does she need a tuner for ota or basic cable w/ no cable box?

You say she needs a stand... So we should be looking at tubes as opposed to lcd's which look nice mounted on a wall or ceiling or under a shelf or etc. etc... ?

Also what size? I know bigger is usually better, but what would a minimum be, if the extra money was spent on some added features such at built in tuner and hdmi ports, instead of just screen size?

For instance, i know someone who bought eight 55" CRT TV's from Sam's Club for under $1,000 each, for his LAN gaming room, but I imagine one of those would look a little gaudy in whatever room your mom is putting this TV.

Hah. I avoided specificity in order to obtain more results, but I guess it backfired.

She's just using basic cable right now, sans box. It will need component video, but like I said, HDMI won't be shunned.

Size isn't a huge concern, though i think mid 20's would be a minimum. I'd like to see 30" or larger though. The TV format doesn't matter either, though a thin CRT or LCD would be grand. Ideally it would match well with the Denon S-101 system that she has.
