I am in the process of finishing off my basement and am trying to wire for a future Home Theater. I would like a projector in the future and am trying to figure out what sort of cable i need to purchase to pull in advance as I will be sheetrocking the ceiling. I am looking at having this completed in the next few months and hope to have a start of a home theater by the end of the year. I was told it depends on my dvd player as to what sort of cable i need as well as my receiver. The gentleman that i talked to mentioned something about the receiver having video up conversion which i dont know what that means. If i was to guess I would best pull a component cable to the spot for my projector is this right? The distance from the projector to my a/v equipment would be maybe 30-40 feet(More than likely closer to 30 feet). Will a component cable still work? Anything else or any other recommendations? Thanks for the help.

There are basically 7 different video connections used on todays equipment, not all of which are of the same quality. Some digital, some analog. Idealy you'll want to use the best quality connection available for each video device you'll be using in your system. For this reason you cannot assume you'll be using only one type of video connection to the projector. If you are uncertain it might be best to plan for the future and provide a variety of connections for reasons of flexibilty and to allow for any future changes.

Most modern projectors have: Composite, S-video, Component, RGB, DVI, and more recently HDMI video connections. DVI and HDMI are fully digital, though RGB and Component allow enough bandwidth for HD connections.

Component video will have no difficulty with 30-40 feet runs.
