I'm contimplating buying a yam RX-V1700 or RX-V2600 my media room is about 15 X 15, Mits 65" 65831 am I doing the right thing

Both are very good units. But if you don't need the latest and greatest gizmos (like HDMI connectors and upscaling) you could save about half the cost by buying the 1500 or 2500. These are the 2004 models. They still do about 95% of what the newer models do.

the reason for my choice is my tv andd cable are both set up with hdmi, shouldn't I have a receiver with hdmi

Tough call there. Some people prefer to send the cable direct from the source to the TV and then send the sound to the receiver by optical cable. They claim that the signal is "less" corrupted that way. Others don't want all those cables running to the TV. One for cable box, another for DVD, another for Xbox, etc etc. They want to send all those cables to the receiver and then have just one cable from the receiver to the TV.
You'd have to decide what means more to you.
But they are all very good receivers and you'll enjoy the sound no matter which one you end up with..
