New to subwoofers

i am wanting to put a Sony 12" Subwoofer, XSL121P5W from walmart into my 2000 chevy silverauto 2500 and i was wondering if it would fit ? would i need an amp? and if i do why would i need one?what does an amp even do? any other wires? anything else special? and i was wondering if that particular subwoofer is a good purchase for $70...thanks for any help!

sony makes awful car audio..spend about 20-30 more and get yourself a 10 inch alpine type r..great entry level sub..i must say though..that car audio gets very expensive..you must get a custom box sealed box made to the subs specs..plus an amp..wiring kit..etc etc..
