New to Speaker Design

I understand to basic principals of how a speaker works but, I dont have the understanding of how to pick out one component(who's crossovers should I use) from another. What questions should I be asking to pick out the components, I know my reciever's limitations but how does that work with how do I choose the equipment to build the loadspeakers.
