I just set up the onkyo tx-sr604. I used the hdmi for the dvd player. I only get a picture, no sound. On the receiver it says Dvd no signal. What am I doing wrong?

Does your dvd player send audio over HDMI? You may have to change a setting in the dvd player setup menu. If the player cannot/will not send audio over HDMI you just need to use an optical or coax digital connection to the receiver.

yes the dvd player does work fine when it is pluged directly to the lcd with the hdmi cord.

What connections do you have? Which connections are going where? What DVD player are you using?

HDMI from DVD to receiver to TV?
DVD player configured to output audio/video over HDMI?
Receiver configured to accept audio/video over HDMI?

I have a toshiba Dvd player. The HDMI cable goes from Dvd player to receiver to TV. This stuff is so complicated.

Yes, this stuff can get complicated but Onkyo manuals are the best I've seen (I buy Onkyo too).

Have you assigned the HDMI input to the DVD input selector? See page 45 of the manual and then do the digital input assignment as well (page 44).

Just FYI, things like digital audio (coax or optical), component video, and HDMI must be 'assigned' because they are not under any given input and can be assigned to just about any input except tuner. You basically have to tell the receiver that when you press the 'DVD' input selector, it should look for the audio at the HDMI 1 jack; that is if you connected the HDMI out of the DVD player to the HDMI 1 input of the receiver.
