So I received a new Home Theater system for Christmas from my wife. We had a Sony HT - C800DP for several years but had been looking to upgrade to a Blu Ray for some time. When the front speakers started to go we decided to upgrade after the new year as apose to try and see what was wrong with it, seemed as good a reason as any to upgrade.

She supried me on Christmas with an LG - LHB335 as we have an LG TV (42LG50) that I've been very happy with and had great reviews when I bought it about 2 years ago. When reading up on this unit it seems to get some mixed reviews, but excited I when ahead and hooked it up anyway. A few things are jumping out at me right away that I wasn't expecting and wondering if its just a junk unit that I should return, I hooked something up wrong or just needs to be calibrated.

The right rear and center speakers have a slight whistle to them, not bad typically when watching a movie or game, but enough to be distracting when in a menu. I have re checked all of the connections and everything is correct, but from what I read on-line seems to be a running issue with this unit. Any work arounds for this?

Also I have watched Blu Rays at other people houses (part of the reason we decided to upgrade) and the image is fantastic, better then a lot of the HD programing. I'm assuming becuase of being in 1080p and not a 720p like some of the networks broadcast in. While mine is an improvment over the DVD, the picture just isn't as sharp or vivid. Again is it the Blu Ray, TV, me or a calibration issue. It is hooked up with an HDMI cable and I've tinkered around with the settings, and while that helped a bit - it is still not on the level some of these other units I've seen. Just less then I expected out of the box for the cost of it.

If you haven't calbirated your set, it probably needs it, certainly with any new player, it should be done. My guess is the all-in-one nature of the unit that you got is probably the culprit for the less than stunning picture quality. Make sure the unit is set to 1080p, as it may not be out of the box.

I went over the calabration last night, forgot that each input needs to be calabrated on it's own so it still was using the default settings. It seemed to help and make a difference from where I was before but still not the stunning difference I was expecting.

Any at home calabration disc that someone can recomend?

Could the TV be a culprit as well?

That TV seemed to get decent reviews, so it is hard to say if the TV is the issue or not. Do you have another TV you can hook that thing up to and see if it has a similar look?

Sound & Vision Home Theater Tune Up (SD DVD) is inexpensive and has all the calibration patterns you need. Digital Video Essentials is another one and it is on Blu-ray.
