I just purchased a Pioneer Elite VSX-21 and no speakers! I am split between Polk LSi and Aperion B5 bookshelf. For now the system will be 2.1 with expansion too 6.1 within 6 months. Everything will be in a room about 15x12 feet.

The idea is too get two bookshelf mounted on the wall and a sub to start. Then in 6 months buy 2 floorstanding and a center. Move the bookshelves too surround position. The and use floorstanding for fronts.

Budget is a concern-- but i am not a novice and i know you get what you pay for. I am looking to keep it under 1000 for a nice L/R bookshelf pair. I am a nut about design and keeping it clean/matching/understated-- Listen to a lot of acoustic and alternative music and watch blu-rays often. I have no interest in blowing my hearing out, i am looking for quality midrange speakers with nice warmth and range-- not silly volume and gimmicks

Aperion or Polk or other?

bookshelf all around

Thats a good idea, i got tunnel vision with the dream of having some big *** floorstanders...

I think bookshelves all around might make more sense, my dreams are crushed... haha

The Aperion's are damn good speakers and IMO have that same "warmth" and dynamics that you are seeking.

Not sure if the B5's wouldn't be too big for surrounds in a room that size though. Maybe go with the 4B's for now and then use them as surrounds when you upgrade the L/R's down the road. Trust me when I say they are amazing speakers especially for their size!

Also I wouldn't rule out towers as if you go Aperion they have several tower sizes that may be perfect for your room.

I can't comment as to the Ascend's as I have never heard them but they do come highly recommended here.

You have a LOT of options for bookshelves if your budget is under $1K.

The Budget Bookshelf Shootout would be a good place to start.
