New System! Need advice Multiple HD inputs

Well, I am about to make purchase a new tv and audio system for my living room.

I can't seem to make up my mind on a a/v receiver. I do have a dumb question thou that I can't seem to find the answer to.

If a receiver has say 3 HDMI inputs and 3 component inputs, can I have 6 HD sources hooked up at once or are they redundant?

This is what I have to hook up:

Ps3 (HDMI)
xBox 360 (HDMI)
Brighthouse Cable (HDMI)
Nintendo Wii (Component)
Samsung 1080p LCD (HDMI)

What would be the best receiver to get? I'd like to stay under 1k.

I am not sure if all receivers have assignable inputs or if they are redundant (HDMI labeled DVD is the same input at component labeled DVD).

Usually inputs are assignable. How many video input do you have? The TV needs to be connected to an HDMI output, not an input. To what you want you need a receiver with at least four video inputs. Three will need to be assigned to HDMI and one to component video.

I way I see it, I want to hook everything up via one HDMI cable to the Samsung TV.

I was looking at a Onkyo TX-SR805 because I want to be somewhat future proof with this purchase.

I am not sure if that works for my setup.

With hd inputs on an avr you will be limited to hdmi and component. If you want all video inputs to be output through a signal hdmi monitor out and at hd format you will need an avr that does conversion/upscaling.
The ONK your looking at has HDMI V1.3 repeater (3in/1out, 1080p compatible), w/HDMI video up-conversion. Using a faroudja chip for upscale.

I think I am starting to get it now. It's been such a long time since I bought anything home audio wise.

So I am right now deciding between the Yamaha RX-V1800 and the Onkyo TX-SR805.

I like the Yamaha better since it looks like it does better up conversion.

One more question that I have; ps3 or stand along player for blu-ray?

PS3 is nice, but with some minor remote control issues, the new pioneer elite bd player is supposed to be bad as@ but at a premium price

If your budget allows a receiver in the $1k price range with 3-4 HDMI inputs would work well with your other equipment. Keep in mind, however, that the only source that "requires" an HDMI connection to the receiver is your PS3 for BluRay playback. For other source like the cable box could connect to the receiver with component video or directly to the display w/ HDMI.

Receiver with 2 HDMI inputs like the Yamaha RX-V663 and Onkyo 605 start in the $400 price range.

Ditto on the cable box. There is no improvement in picture from a cable box via HDMI vs. component. The only thing is that you'd need an audio cable in addition from the box with the component. I use component for my cable for the exact same reason. I can also recommend the yamaha for your needs.
