Alright, I know htib is like cussing around these places, but, is the onkyo ht-s5100 a terrible buy? for $350 refurbished from onkyo, is there something in this price range that is much better? Also, is this receiver a decent thing that i can upgrade the speakers/sub later on? I don't want to spend a ton, this is going in a college house with 5 other roommates.

Thanks in advance,
Travis

Hey Travis... Welcome to audioholics...

Ummm... yeah... good deal.. 7.1 system... HDMI... Ipod Dock...

My brother has this setup. He's happy. Sure, its obviously not gonna compete with a lot of the stuff on this board but for your application it think its gonna be hard to go wrong. A lot depends on your point of reference. I "enjoy" watching movies at my bro's house because its my bro and we're having a good time. He'd be the first to tell you he's in it for the experience and not the critical listening aspects. He couldnt tell you what frequency response is or what "wattage" means. Overall though, the system serves its purpose very well. I think he paid 500 for it. Its the speakers that hold the system back a bit.

The receiver alone is darn near worth the price tag in my opinion. That thing looks like its got every feature an entry level system would need and will give you plenty of opportunity to upgrade to better speakers in the future. Lots of power it looks like as well.

I cant imagine you not being happy with it. I think down the road it might leave a little to be desired but for the price and application you're gonna be hard pressed to find a BETTER deal.

+1 with adwilk, this system will be perfect for your needs and my first system was an older Onkyo 7.1 HITB and I loved it, the speakers arent the best but will do a darn good job and the receiver and sub are pretty top notch, your basically paying for the receiver and getting the rest of it for free, so go and order it already:D

good price for an entry level home theater, has plenty of speakers, dont sound half bad for the price, and sub puts out some bass, unlike some other home theaters in a box .

good buy

Umm, I think I can see how that's going to work.:eek::eek:

This will be fine for a college house. Then once you graduate and start making some serious coin, just throw it away and start over from scratch.:)

A vote of confidence from me, too.

Just an FYI that you can score brand new units for around $400 (from Amazon and Vann's, to name two that I saw).
