HEY! never really been on a forum situation like this so go easy if I sound quite ill informed .
I am Searching for an amplifier 2 ch or 5.1 and set of front shelf speakers.room size 8m X 6m. Budget $600AUD.
Recently had a Marantz SR430 die on me,Had the thing for near on 20 years and never missed a beat.
My inputs remain as a CD, DVD, turntable (phono input important) and itunes airport.
Music is my main vice I feel 2 channel the way to go but do not know much about 5.1 equipment.I would like the option for a sub down the line.
Currently really impressed with the Tannoy range of lower end shelf speakers Mercurys,E11, F2 They seem to really punch with nice seperation.
Remembering I am in Australia so costings due to availability seem a little different to the states.

Tannoy is a very reputable company. I have used Tannoy speakers to mix quite a few records and they have been fantastic. Good luck I would go with the Tannoys. What other brands do you have near you?

OK - I'm lazy and don't want to look it up - but how much is $600 Aussie bucks translated to US bucks? I'm thinking $350 - 400 or so? If so that's a pretty tight budget... no offense - but you'll need to be bargain shopping. Do they have a Craigslist type deal in Australia or some kind of free classifieds? I just picked up a $200 Yamaha sub for $40 off Craigslist - looks and sounds brand new. You may want to keep your eyes open for similar bargains.

Yeah thanks.$600 AUD = $400 US
Lets assume I up my budget then.
I d rather not enter bargin world.
Would I be best looking for 2.1 style systems or 5.1 considering I don t really want the surround sound thing,I heard 5.1 systems come a little cheaper.
An amplified phono input is important as is some shelf speakers that reproduce some decent bottom end.
Wharfedale is another brand available to me here.
