New surround system

I am pretty new to the audio world. I want to buy myself a 5.1 system for in the livingroom, and a second zone for the citchen with two speakers.
I was looking at an Onkyo TX-NR609, combined with the Canton 125MX speakerset.
Since the Onkyo is able to do two zones, has network connectivity, has 6 hmdi inputs, a VGA input and a front usb port, this seems a very good receiver for what I need.
What do you guys think of this setup? it should go for about 1000$.
Is there a better combination for what I need?

The Onkyo 609 is a good choice. Canton is good but a better choice (in my book) would be the Axiom EPIC midi 125. It's more money but well worth it. Hope this helps.

I would suggest the Denon AVR-3311CI or the new 3312CI vs. the Onkyo, as I have heard the Onkyo's are very Bright in Sound Quality (SQ) vs. the Denon's.

"Axiom EPIC midi 125"

They will be better, seen the price, but I want both the receiver AND the speakers to be about 1000$, not the speakers 1000$ and the receiver 600$ :)
What I mean is, the Onkyo should be fine, but I wonder if the speakers are also good for the price. Or maybe there are better options for -about- the same price.

What do you mean? So the Denons are better but the Onkyo is better in Sound Quality??

and how does an amp with flat frequency response +/- 0.1db or less emphasize the sound from 5khz to 8khz such that it would be perceived as bright?
