New Subwoofer Question

My receiver is rated to 250 watts, and I am looking to purchase a subwoofer rated to handle 600 watts. I've been told that the receiver doesnt power the sub, but I want the best sub for my system. So my question is ,should I be concerned about too powerful a subwoofer? And is there an ideal place for a subwoofer to sit?

The system:
Harmon Kardon AVR 630 Receiver
JBL E 100 Front speakers
JBL EC 35 Center Channel
JBL L810 Rear Surrounds

What is your budget for your new subwoofer? And as far as placement goes, corners offer the most gain, but often not the flattest response. To find the best placement in your room will take some experimenting. Check out this info:

I am looking at the JBL L8400 Sub. The spec's follow. It sells for around 1200.00

General
Amplifier Power (RMS) 600 Watts
Peak Dynamic Power 1200 Watts
The Peak Dynamic Power is measured by recording the highest peak-to-center voltage produced by the power amplifier with its limiters disabled, across the output of a resistive load equal to minimum impedance of the transducer, using a 50Hz sine wave burst, 3 cycles on, 17 cycles off.
Frequency Response (–3dB) 22Hz – Low-pass crossover frequency
Low-Pass Crossover Frequencies 50Hz – 150Hz, continuously adjustable; 150Hz when using speaker-level connection
Low-Frequency Transducer 12" (300mm) PolyPlas™ cone with rubber surround and cast-aluminum chassis; HeatScape™ motor structure; Symmetrical Field Geometry™ (SFG™); oversized fiberglass voice coil; magnetic shorting ring
Baffle Low diffraction, IsoPower™
Enclosure Design Sealed
Inputs Gold-plated 5-way binding-post speaker-level; left and right line-level, switchable to LFE
Outputs Gold-plated 5-way binding-post speaker-level
Dimensions (H x W x D) 16-1/2" (15-1/2" without feet) x 15-1/2" x 15-1/2"
(419mm [394mm without feet] x 394mm x 394mm)
Weight 58 lb (26.4kg)

General
A massive PolyPlas™ cone with cast-aluminum chassis and rubber surround, with enough power to bring down the house.
The L8400P is available with an attractive Black Ash, Beech or Cherry finish.

The receiver and sub have no relation to one another as far as power. The receiver just sends the signal. The sub amp powers it. The subs specs/output need the amp to deliver xxx/RMS/Peak watts to drive the driver in it's custom box to it's design goals.

For 1200, you can do better then that. Much better.

Look at Hsu and SVS for starters.

Axiom Audio EP500 is $1100. Also a good choice.

Theres a lot of choices out there. You need to listen to some and then report back with your findings. I perfer THD free bass that extends down deep (although I don't have a subwoofer capable of this yet), while others like a certain curve to the frequency response. As Einstine said "Its all relative" :)

That doesn't seem like very much sub for $1200. Dig this:

http://svsound.com/products-sub-box-plus2.cfm

For $1200 + shipping, you'll get a subwoofer that will make that JBL cry for it's mommy. I'm sorry, but for $1200, a subwoofer had better hit 20Hz with ease. The PB-12+/2 will do 16Hz with ease.

There are other, less expensive options from SVS and Hsu that will also stomp that JBL. Hsu's top of the line VTF3-MKII is also a great subwoofer.

for 1200bucks, i think you can buy the SVS top of the line model (cylinder?)
also, i 2nd the axiom ep500 (which coincidentally, this forum has a review of that says you cant get any better for 1150USD) you now have 50USD more for shipping.
(both of the above i havent listened to)
if you want brand name recognition, try to listen to Velodyne DLS-5000R series OR a Velodyne SPL-1000R

oh and btw, there's no such thing as too powerful in subwoofers. (at least not in your budget)

good luck
