New Subwoofer Project

My goal this summer is to make a new Subwoofer. I'm not sure if this is the right place for this thread. I currently have a old dual 10" woofer set up for a HT. I want to make a DIY woofer that is 15" at least but was thinking about doing an 18". seems a bit much for a HT but I enjoy a strong bass in my music and like the rumbles from movies as well. I really don't have any clue what im doing but have just got books regarding the math needed for box dimensions and building plans. i wanted a bass that was more broad and handled 150 hz and below. I was wondering if anyone had recommendations regarding drivers and amps and also any tips or help at all? my budget is 400 max for driver and amp. I was also curious about making bookshelf speakers and if that was easier than subwoofer building. basically just want really good sound for cheap like everyone else. upgrading my surround system in some manner this summer. my receiver does 80 watts per channel on 7.1. any guidance is appreciated

This is a very good starter build. Look closely at this thread, it will do what you want. You will never come out for $400 and amp, but a little more. You need a slightly bigger budget if you are going to build something worthwhile.

I designed that sub build as an effective simple build.

You should have posted this thread in the DIY forum by the way.
