I spent most of the day yesterday auditioning subs, and have all but resolved that my 2000-2400 cu ft apartment coupled with my love of money may keep the Velodyne DD-12 and SPL 1200R out of my listening space. I find myself returning to the fairly new SVS SB12-Plus but know no way to audition it.

Does anyone have experience with the SB12-Plus. The reviews I have read all give accolades to SVS for their achievement in the small sub dept, however I rarely see unfavorable reviews on any products.

I hope some of you have one to share your experience in terms of supporting music.

I listen to 70/30 MUSIC/movies in a 1800-2400 cu ft apartment environment. So them small sub is important. I want something to fit under a coffee table not replace it j/k. But you get my point.

I wounder if the SVS PB-13 Ultra line will have a small box product in the line.

Either way the reviews and price on the SB12-Plus warrants very serious consideration.

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I don't yet have any experience with the SB12-Plus but I did inquire about it via email with SVS. My living room is 16X18X9 which is roughly 2400 cubic feet and they said it should be adequate for that room but of course the ideal would be two of them.

It has more inputs and outputs than you would ever need (high-level, low-level, and balanced) but also has a one band PEQ that could help with getting it dialed in correctly. I asked if they were considering making that sub with only a single line-level input like the PB10-NSD but they said not in the near future.

I think it depends on what you really want out of a sub. I'd like a sub to be able to get down real close to 20 Hz but don't really care about the ability for it to produce extreme SPL at such low frequencies. The SB12-Plus is spec'ed to go down to 20 Hz or so but will not produce the extreme SPL at that level as some of their much bigger subs (which is why they suggest two of them).

90 dB or so at 20 Hz coupled with the small size and weight and nice finish options makes it attractive to me and it is the one I will probably buy in the next few months after all of my house re-wiring is complete.

reading between the lines the 2 reviews for the SB12plus ... it kept saying to me: "get the PB12 plus if you have the space ... if you don't have the space, get the SB12 plus"

I was waiting for conlusions that say: e.g. 'this sb12 is better in music than the pb12' ... i'm still waiting

Are you sure you will be able to get full benefit from a sub in an apartment?
How will they respond?

"They" will be pissed from time to time, but that's apartment living. I don't really expect to exercise the full potential of the sub on movies but for music I hope to achieve a much more full range system. This is why I am having trouble justifying the DD-12. It seem too expensive to be underutilized. The Sb12+ is only 800 bucks. I say "only" b/c the DD12 is 3 times as much.

Small is a big factor here. I do not want an 18x18x24 box in my space.

If you are referring to the Audioholics review I agree. But that review seems like there is a page missing.

there's another review at hometheatershack.com ... same conclusion.

anyway, the differences between the DD and the SB12 are:
1) servo controlled driver (less THD)
2) on screen 8 band PEQ -> this to me is enough to justify the cost but it depends on your budget and listening tastes.

some people like the THD for HT usage. some people like the low THD for music usage.
