New Speakers Around $100

Hey Guys,

I've recently resurrected my dad's old stereo. I've been using it mainly to listen to LPs and sometimes CDs. The system did not have speakers initially so I had to buy a pair and went with the cheapest pair I could find; these happened to be MISSIL ($60 for 2 floor standing speakers... ) speakers from XSCargo. Well I've decided that this isn't going to be a passing fad for me and I'd like to upgrade my speakers. I've come across a few entry level models that have met mixed reviews on this board, mainly the ENERGY C-300s, POLK Monitor 50s and Athena LS-300s, all come in at around $100.

I've got a budget of $250 (Shipped to Eastern Canada) and would like some input on both model choice and online dealers. Any input would be appreciated!

P.S. I'm using an old Mitsubishi DA-R7 receiver for now.

Is that $250 CA or USD? Have you considered buying used?

I believe the Canadian Dollar is around $.95 US now so it is not a big issue. As for used, yes I have but I find it hard to trust eBay for electronics.

I'd go with the Polks. They have good midrange, could be better on the treble (but not bad). But the low frequency on Polks usually shine quite well. Overall you get good clarity and balance for the price.

Get pair of Behringer 2030P for $130 and Dayton SUB-120 HT for $120
Total budget: $250
You wont get better sound for the money from nowhere else

What are your thoughts on the Axiom M3s? Their $90 over my budget but the reviews seem extremely positive. Also I do not believe a sub is possible with my current receiver.

Thanks for your input so far guys!
