New Sound System Recommendations

Audiophyte
Hi Everyone,

Well, I am posting in the newbie section for a reason - I am an audiophyte looking for some advice.

My loving wife bought me a brand new Denon 3808CI and a Sanyo Z5 projector for Xmas. What I need to figure out is what type of speakers to put around it. The speakers will be used for both Movies (home Theater) and for listening to music (CDs/MP3s) .

We have a large room that we are putting this all in (30ft long and 20 ft wide). All hardwood floors and high(10') ceilings.

I went to the local Hi End audio shop and told them I have a $2K budget for speakers. The pointed me in the direction of Boston Acquistics (VR1 mains, E50, XB4, and CR67). It is basically a 5.1 system.

I also talked to one of my Audio File friends and he suggested Looking at HSU research: hsuresearch - their ultimate1 package. Which is more of a 7.1 system - in the same price range.

Does anyone have any recommendations on these two system or something else they feel would be within budget and provide the best sound/value combination?

Thanks,
Kidder

Welcome to the forum!

Typically, you choose speakers first and then worry about a receiver or amp to power them, but since you have the 3808, it should power pretty much anything. Speakers are incredibly subjective so it wouldn't be wise to go on someone's recommendation alone. Get out and audition some of the usual suspects like Bostons, B&W, PSB, Mirage, KEF, Paradigm, DefTech, Monitor Audio, to name just a few. Bring your own music, take your time, and take some notes. Also, HSU makes excellent subs so I'd give them a look as well as SVS for subs. You're safe buying HSU or SVS subs without auditioning as no one will tell you they suck.
