New setup advice for 2.1 home theatre & music

Hi,

I'm looking get a new audio system. I'd like to keep it under $500 total for speakers and a home theater reciever. It will be used for music about 50% and 50% as a home theatre system. I'm not very picky, I'd just like a versatile system that is better than what I currently have. I also have no need or desire to setup a full 5.1 system. I don't want to run speaker wire all over the place.

I'm debating between two different setups. First is the Sherwood VR-670 Hollywood system. The second is just purchasing a new reciever, center speaker, front speakers, and possibly a subwoofer.

What would be better way to go? If it is #2, recommendations on hardware?

I currently have:

Bose 301s for the fronts, Bose V-100 video speaker for the center, no subwoofer, and a Sony STR-D515 reciever.

I like this for music OK, but as a HT system, it sounds bad. Dialogue is rather "muddy" and low sounding.

Thanks,

Andy
