I have a Onkyo TXSR606, which appears to be dead, unless Onkyo makes and exception to provide warranty service on it (again).

I have take some time to look at new options should i be SIOL. I have 2 choices right now, and would be open to hear suggestions. I am looking at the Onkyo TX-SR607 for 279 or the 608 for $379. On amazon, the 607 is more expensive than the newer 608, I dont care about the resale, but any idea as to why?

My speakers include Energy C-100's and Energy Sub. Thanks for your time and help.

Mike

The 607 is $247 to my door.

If you can swing it I'd look at a factory refurbished 707 from Accessories For Less.

The 707 is $400 to my door, what does the extra $150 get me, and is it really worth it?

Thanks, I think for me I won't use the preouts, and 150 extra for 10 watts isn't worth it.

Let's agree that you can't future proof anything in electronics, as we don't know what new technology is coming next year.

The 607 has the
Audyssey 2eq, dynamic eq, and dynamic volume.

What is the multi eq? What does that do?

Google is your friend. It's just me, but just about the only point of focus for me in shopping for a new processor is the Audyssey suite that is offered.

Scroll to bottom for a chart that gives the basic differences in rez between teh various MultEq offerings:

Google is your friend. But I don't think it will matter too much. With all respect I'm pretty sure that you posted a question with the goal have having your decision for the 607 validated. That's fairly obvious when you argue every point. Fine it's a decent entry priced receiver.

FWIW I suggested the 707 because I own a 606 and a 707 and while $20 more than the 608 you listed and lacking in 3D the 707 is a better/less limiting receiver because of MultiEQ and because at some point you may fall in love with new speakers that need more power (the preouts you don't need now become handy) or need a receiver that supports a 4ohm load even if 3D never takes off (and it's in doubt).

Anyway good luck with your research.

I'm just asking based upon what I currently have, no upgrades in the future as they would be built again from the ground up, is the 707 worth it or is the 607 going to do it?

If no upgrades are going to happen then the 607 is a great bargain and a good choice. I'm just upgrade happy. ;)

I am curious about how your 606 died. You still must have faith in Onkyo because you are still sticking with them. I'm asking about this because I own a 606 right now and I have read about some people having overheating issues with this AVR. Mine has been performing great since I bought it the first week they went on sale. Could you tell us a bit more about how it died? Thanks.

The internal layout of the 606 is fatally flawed, as the heat generated destroys the solder, and in turn will then wear parts faster. As in anything it is not all units that will meet this fate, but alot. I hope u are one of the lucky ones.

As for sticking with Onkyo, they still make a good receiver and apparanlty have "learned" from this issue. Also, take a look at threads about other manufacturers, they too have problems. I know that Onkyo is usually a year ahead of everyone else in terms of features given at certain price points.

The key to keeping them working is air flow. The 707 in my bedroom is in a cabinet with glass doors but there is a vent under the receiver, 4" of open space over it, and a nearly silent fan on the back of the cabinet that comes on at 85 degrees and sucks any heat out.
