I just picked up an older Velodyne sub. I have a Yamaha receiver that does not have a crossover frequency adjustment it just has an LFE level adjustment. I have the sub hooked to the sub out on the receiver and it only plays extremely low bass. It sounds ok on a dvd and terrible on music.

Is there a way I can get it to play higher bass notes? Does it do this because it has an internal crossover and the Yamaha is already sending a low frequency signal. Or is it supposed to sound this way. I have tried putting it in my seat and crawling around on the floor to find the best spot and moved it around alot. Do I need a reciever with a crossover freq adjustment? Can I hook it up differently and still have 5.1 or do I need a reciever with a crossover freq adjustment?

The guy I bought it from says he turned his crossover freq. all the way up.

Any help would be appreciated

A subwoofer is only supposed to play low, low frequencies. Preferably below 80 hz but that can vary somewhat and some can theoretically play a bit higher. Not too much though.

Likewise, a subwoofer out is only supposed to send low frequencies to the subwoofer. Ideally, 80 hz is pretty much a standard but, again, there can be some that go higher but not too much higher.

What, exactly are you shooting for? Most music doesn't really have a lot of content that really requires a subwoofer.

Maybe I have the sub too loud then. If the bass climbs in a song I get the first note booming from the sub then I hear no more notes. Maybe I need new front speakers or to mess with my adjustments a little more.I would like to hear the boom and the rest of the notes.
