Ok so i have decided to upgrade my receiver. I currently have a yamaha 5890
and want more features and more power. The two models i have been looking at are the denon AVR-3860 and the pioneer elite vsx-84txsi. Now i know everyone is saying wait until HDMI 1.3 capable receivers are out but i dont fully understand what Hdmi 1.3 is going to get me. If it is audio i dont care about the one cable solution of hdmi i will run an optical cable. The only thing that has me hesitant is the new models coming out. Any input would be appreciated as this is hopefully will last me a few years. Thanks in advance

HDMI 1.3 will be compatible with HD-DVD and BluRay, while current versions are not.

With Denon, the 1507, 1707 and 1907 were just released, so I would wait a bit to see when the 3807 might be coming out.

if you're worried about features being too variable, maybe you could just address the "power" side of your need. consider investing in a seperate amp and then let the features settle down to what you want next year...

one of these:

or one of these:

will fill that power need and still be usable with your next processor.

even a two channel amp to drive your mains can free up a lot of headroom in your 5890.

just a thought.

But then i have to buy a processor, i want the whole package all in one, i think either one of these receivers should power my speakers perfectly i hope :)

Not necessarily, Timbo, Leprkon's made a good suggestion here. The Yamaha you noted should have a pretty decent pre-out section that you can use as a pre/pro and adding an external amp (3, 5 or 7 channel) would make a substantial difference in the sound quality at moderate to loud levels as opposed to the on-board amps. A 3 or 5 channel amp should be more than enough as the surrounds or surrounds and surround backs don't necessitate the power requirements the mains and center usually do.

Unless you really needed HDMI or some of the newer features, external amplification will likely provide you with the biggest bang for your buck at this point, IMHO... -TD

No current specs on a 3807....yet. Denon seems to be holding it 06 line for the higher models probably in anticipation of adding 1.3 and all of the new sound formats. The CI series designation along with the MKII addition seem to be just to hold customers over until they revamp the upper end of thier line. I would expect that we could see newer models in the upper side of the line by the end of 06 into the early part of 07.
